These Boots

These Boots

When I look back over my life there are a lot of things I wish I still had. My vintage Atari, because it would fetch a pretty penny on eBay, all the stuff I had in a storage unit when I first got together with my husband, because it was all my “good stuff”, and the jewelry that once disappeared. I was babysitting one night, left my watch with all my rings at the house where I was sitting, and the next morning they offered to leave it in the mailbox for me. By 7:45am it was gone, never to be seen again. My class ring, a few rings my father gave me, and my great-grandmother’s diamond ring were in that collection. I still close my eyes and wish I could somehow find them again. Mainly because I’m a sentimental fool, and I love to collect things. It’s how I hold on to memories.

My Blondie makes fun of me all the time for my “collections.” There are very few things she is sentimental about. But her grandparents gave her this pair of boots for graduation, and ooooh, they were beautiful.

In fact, she wore them we she took off for Nashville. And she had them on the day she met her beau. And they just sort of morphed into her favorite pair of boots. Read the rest of this entry

An Early Arrival

An Early Arrival

I’m not sure if there’s anything more special than a Christmas baby. I’ll never forget the first year I spent Christmas with a baby in my arms. Suddenly, every story I’d ever known took on a whole new meaning.

It’s Just A Car, Baby Girl

Standard

Do you ever have those moments where something your parents said rings out in a moment you’re having with your children? Well, it happens to me. I find myself sounding like my mom or my dad and thinking “how did I let this happen?”

This week, two separate instances reminded me of one of the scariest moments of my teenage life.

CutlassI was driving to my step-dad’s company picnic in the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme recently passed down to me.

My little sister was in the car with me.

We spotted a young mother, walking with a baby on her hip. It was so hot outside.  If I remember correctly, she was pulling another young child by the hand and she had a gallon of milk. She just looked over-whelmed. Read the rest of this entry

Today’s the Day!

Today’s the Day!

I can’t believe the day has finally arrived. I’ve watched Blondie and her beau prepare for months now! The stars have finally aligned.

I always knew this day would come. I just never knew when. To tell you the truth, when Blondie came home from Nashville I prayed and prayed that she wouldn’t give up on her music.

I knew she’d want to live close to her family with a baby on the way. That makes perfect sense. And bless this son-in-law of mine that tolerates living one house over from his in-laws. You know that’s got to be tough some days! Read the rest of this entry

I’ve Been Keeping Secrets

I’ve Been Keeping Secrets

So much has been going on in this zoo of mine. My son is 17 days away from graduation. It’s been quite a ride with that kid. He’s an amazing young man. He’s smart. But the classroom hasn’t been his forte. He’s bored in there. He’d rather build something. I think he’s put together 5 cars since school started.

He drug home one little S-10 truck and put a V8 in it. If you’re not a car person, let’s just say tiny truck + big motor = FAST & LOUD. I’m excited to see what Dylan’s gonna do with his life. I’m proud of the man he’s become. He might not turn in his geometry, but if you’re fishing at the river and you get stuck in the mud, I guarantee he’ll be right there with his truck and a chain to save the day.

I don’t think it’s really sinking in just yet. 17 days and that little bitty baby will be done with the biggest chunk of childhood and I’ll have to give up my efforts to micro-manage him once and for all. Read the rest of this entry

No More Shadow

No More Shadow

Seventeen years ago I was a young mama full of enthusiasm. We had just moved into our house and I absolutely hated it. It was so small, so bland but the landlord offered to sell it for a rock-bottom price and I had HGTV so we started making it our own for our little family. We had a bubbly little girl, a bundle-of-joy baby boy, and a black Labrador retriever that was never meant to be our dog and she’d just had a litter of puppies.

We weren’t going to keep any of them. I swore it up and down as my little Dyl Pickle toddled through the hallway saying “puppy” for the first time. Then Blondie started getting attached to the runt. “But Mama, this one is so tiny…..” Read the rest of this entry

Sock ‘Em

Standard

Why can’t someone invent disposable socks? I mean they would have to be both cost effective and sweat-sturdy. Oh great, this idea goes completely against my environmental reuse-recycle-repurpose philosophy, but then so do paper plates and I can’t lie, I use them ALMOST EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I’m sorry, when you have a family this big, sometimes shortcuts make all the difference. I do not have time to wash 15 plates every night and I cannot keep up with matching the socks. I’ve tried. Really, I have. I’ve tried pinning them together in the dirty clothes. I’ve tried matching them after every load. I’ve tried keeping all the socks to the side and just doing one load of sock laundry and I’m still stuck without a practical solution. The problem is me honestly. Read the rest of this entry

Blondie Strikes Again

Standard

Blondie and her geography, or lack there of, often bring me a great deal of amusement. There was that one time she thought we needed passports to drive to Oklahoma.  Then there was the time that she couldn’t understand that London was part of England.  After that I sent her this joke, thinking for sure she’d get it… but NO!

Still here

Standard

I’m sitting in this hospital room again. There’s nothing like the cold sterile surroundings of a place like this to make you seek our your blessings. Honestly I feel like I spend too much time here, but just when I start to let my inner-child pout a little bit, something always slaps me back into reality.

Paging Dr. House

Standard

I don’t have much time to watch TV these days, so my references are probably more than a little out-dated, but I used to watch that show “House” on Fox. Does it even still come on? The patients always have these strange symptoms that are seemingly unrelated and Dr. after Dr. fail to find the answers until Dr. House starts with his white board and super-human myster-solving skills. I’ve often stared at my daughter and wished he would just walk through the door and bring us some answers!
