Ready or Not, Here We Go

I’m not sure if I’m going to sit down and make any iron clad resolutions this year. Instead I think I will vow to count my blessings every single day. This past year I really learned how to let go and let God. I’ve been at the bottom of the barrel with the cutoff notices in my hand and no idea how I was going to manage them and instead of freaking out I folded my hands together and at every turn He provided for my every need. It takes a lot for a control freak to give into blind faith and trust that everything will be ok, but I’ve lived in this house 17 years and so far we’ve always had food and lights and clothes and gasoline in the car so if I’ve had to swallow some lumps, that’s ok, it was all part of the journey.

20141209_083117I know 2017 is going to bring a lot of new changes. In just a few short months my first born son will graduate high school and move on to new things. This house will change. I won’t have my Mr. FixIt all the time. And when he goes, Hercules will go with him, and I’m gonna miss his big sad eyes riding shotgun every morning. Read the rest of this entry

Blessings, Not Bee Stings

I have to admit it. I’m one of those people. I love inspirational quotes. Yep, I do. I try my best not to over-share them on Facebook or pin too many on Pinterest but sometimes a good ole quote is exactly the boost I need!

This morning as I walked up the stairs at the high school, I noticed some very profound words hanging on the wall. They went something like this:

It was a good day for that reminder to cross my path. I was on the verge of spewing some highly disrespectful thoughts. Sometimes it’s very hard to face ignorance with kindness. Read the rest of this entry

All my kids have ADD or ADHD or OCD or ODD… if it’s got an acronym, we’ve probably got it somewhere in this household. It can make for some challenges. One thing we don’t have is a dull moment. EVER.

Last night in the minutes between football / dance / and cheer practice, I whipped up some Taco Salads to feed my crew. I doubled what I normally cook, which happens to be a lot, because I knew the night of practice would lead to extra hungry kids, and it’s been a while since we had any leftovers to grace the shelves of our refrigerator.

I love to cook three of four days of big meals, and then have an “eat whatever you can find” kind of night. I guess you might call that “Potluck”, but, when you have 5 hungry boys, you don’t always have anything left for Potluck night. Last night I was just about to put away the rest of the refried beans when my son Trenton said “Would you like me to clean out the pan of beans?” Read the rest of this entry

Pray it Again

Last night I was digging around on my desk. That’s a pretty scary endeavor, my desk is known to hide all sorts of things. I’ve tried to organize it, to clean it off, but the clutter just finds it’s way back shortly after I find my way to the wood grain. Even my mother tried to clean my desk once. She was really upset about the chaotic mess piled around my monitor, but then I sent her this:

CleanDeskShe never really said anything else about my desk…. (Sorry my dear Democrats, I still love you….)

Anyway, I was digging around for a spiral and I picked up a turqoise notebook and I noticed the label on the bottom had my maiden name printed on it! Woah, this must be old! So I opened it, and I had only written on a handful of pages, but what I had written were my prayers.

Still here

I’m sitting in this hospital room again. There’s nothing like the cold sterile surroundings of a place like this to make you seek our your blessings. Honestly I feel like I spend too much time here, but just when I start to let my inner-child pout a little bit, something always slaps me back into reality.

Counting Blessings

Every November it seems that Facebook is lit up with statuses where people are counting their blessings. I must confess, I love it. We all know Facebook is the place where people go to say all the ugly things in these veiled “passive-aggressive” ways that are meant to jab one another constantly. It’s a refreshing change to see people humbled by the listings of their blessings instead.

Yesterday, November 1st, I was thankful for the posts that reminded me that it’s time to stop, and recognize the many ways in which my life is blessed again and again. It can get hard to find the silver linings when you look around at the people you love most and there are divorces, surgeries, economic hardships and losses all around. I am praying for one sister’s spirit, another sister’s health, one sister’s sanity, one sister’s heart, and another sister’s struggle to see how beautiful she is both inside and out, and I wonder is it just me, or do we seem to face more than our share of challenges? Major Things are Happening

Life with Blondie is definitely picking up the pace. It’s moving so fast I’m scared if I blink I will miss something majorly important! We are preparing to embark upon the SENIOR YEAR! I’m not ready for this, and yet, she’s so ready for this!

Remember the binder? The one she spent a good thirty hours on at the end of Spring-break, the one she was making for Officer Try-outs? Well, it turned out that all her hard work paid off. Not only did I hear that it was one of the best binders completed in years, but she made officer! Not just officer, but head officer, SOOO Blondie will spend her Senior year as the Major of the Golden Girls Drill Team! The try-outs were on a Friday night, and the results were supposed to be posted at 10pm. Just as she was headed to go look at the list, someone called her and told her the news. I kid you not, she jumped for joy a mile high like one of those people who finally got their check from Ed McMahon!

After a week of sitting in a dance studio with her every night, counting 8 counts over and over, helping her learn choreography, and watching her dance until her body was completely worn out, collapsing to the polished wood floor, I got to witness the screaming smile that made every moment worth it!

I’m beyond proud of her. I keep asking myself: “Is this the same girl who couldn’t remember to smile and do a high kick?” (Her freshman year, she could do one, or the other, but rarely both together!) Now she’s gonna prance on that football field, dance her booty off, while they announce her name every week as the leader of the pack! For a Texas girl, it’s quite the achievement to become such an important part of those Friday night lights! It gives me chills. Not just because she’s my daughter, not just because I watched her set a goal and accomplish it, but because she almost gave it up. For me.
