Ready or Not, Here We Go

Standard

I’m not sure if I’m going to sit down and make any iron clad resolutions this year. Instead I think I will vow to count my blessings every single day. This past year I really learned how to let go and let God. I’ve been at the bottom of the barrel with the cutoff notices in my hand and no idea how I was going to manage them and instead of freaking out I folded my hands together and at every turn He provided for my every need. It takes a lot for a control freak to give into blind faith and trust that everything will be ok, but I’ve lived in this house 17 years and so far we’ve always had food and lights and clothes and gasoline in the car so if I’ve had to swallow some lumps, that’s ok, it was all part of the journey.

20141209_083117I know 2017 is going to bring a lot of new changes. In just a few short months my first born son will graduate high school and move on to new things. This house will change. I won’t have my Mr. FixIt all the time. And when he goes, Hercules will go with him, and I’m gonna miss his big sad eyes riding shotgun every morning. Read the rest of this entry

Daddy Didn’t Know

Standard

So apparently my husband had no idea that we give out teacher appreciation gifts! I’m not sure how he missed that. We’ve had kids in school for the past 16 years now. I used to do a Christmas gift, maybe a little something for their birthdays- but add that to the pile of “things I did when I had a few kids!” Now, I run a zoo, so it’s just once a year that I sit down and try to show my appreciation for the people who spend almost as much time with my kids as I do- and if you know my kids, you know these amazing people deserve some appreciation! Daddy should have realized that even if there wasn’t a tradition of teacher appreciation already in place, there would need to be some kind of recognition for the people who help tame our circus!

This year I thought it would be fun to make some edible arrangements. Every single time that commercial comes on, KK asks me if we can order one of those. I looked once- I was going to surprise her, and when I saw the price, let’s just say that fell off my to-do list. I thought “surely they couldn’t be that hard…”

My little ZooCrew was so excited to open the fridge this morning and see the creations they got to give their teachers! One teacher even emailed me a pic of her enjoying it!

Going Back

Standard

Well it’s official. Summer is OVER! Today the weather will still be a scorching 100° outside, but the focus has shifted. Instead of getting ready for a picnic or a jump in the pool, we’ll be doing homework and heading out for football practice. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE summer vacation.

I love sleeping in a little later, planting flowers together, having lunch in the park, but let me tell you, having the ZooCrew home all day everyday is a lot of really hard work. My poor refrigerator actually posted it’s own “Thank You” note on the door this morning. It said “Have a great first day of school kids, I will enjoy keeping my doors closed for the next 8 hours.” My front door said “Omgoodness, I won’t be opened 14 times an hour today.” and the cold air added “I might actually be able to stay inside.” Meanwhile the washer and dryer were breathing huge sighs of relief. “They can’t change clothes ten times if they’re at school!”

Personally I’m going to miss the knock-down drag-out wars over whether we are watching Disney Jr or Gone in 60 Seconds. When I get in the car to run to Wal-Mart I won’t be sure how to handle the silence. I’ve grown accustomed to “It’s my turn in the front” or “I promise not to ask for anything if I can go with you” and “MOM! She stole my seatbelt!” Read the rest of this entry
